Vintage cars, vintage planes, super cars and modern jets — the Wings and Wheels show at Dunsfold Park in Surrey has it all.

As a photographer, the best part about this particular airshow is it’s proximity to Gatwick Airport. That means it has what they call a ‘low ceiling’ i.e. the height at which the aircraft can perform. It’s possible to get some great images there and with a 400mm lens you can almost see the pilots’ eyes as their planes fly past.

These images were made a couple of years ago, the last time we were able to attend. Sadly I wasn’t there in any official capacity (hint, hint – if you can get me an introduction I’d be very grateful indeed) so these photos are just for fun.

At Wings and Wheels the planes are so close you can almost see the pilots’ eyes as they fly past

Besides, it makes a great change to try out a few other skills from time to time. It’s not that often you get to practice panning shots with such fabulous vehicles at breakneck speeds either.

For me, Wings and Wheels at Dunsfold Park in Surrey gets a massive thumbs up.

The only dampener on the show is the news of another tragic accident. A few days ago a Hawker Hunter jet crashed into traffic on the A27 at Shoreham killing at least 11 people maybe more.

The CAA have subsequently (and quite rightly too imho) placed a ban on vintage jets performing ‘high-energy aerobatics’ over land. Sadly, future airshows will lack some of the thrill and excitement now we’re only allowed to see these aircraft perform a fly-past.

It’s a real shame but I quite understand why it’s necessary.

I wonder if that will create a know-on effect for the Red Bull Air Race?

If you’re better informed than me, please leave a comment below and let me know. Similarly if I made an error classifying any of the vehicles featured in the photos I’ve posted here, I’d love a comment so I can correct it.

Gavin
